Max Papis became the first driver not named Rahal to sit in the seat of the Miller Lite-sponsored car for Team Rahal and the Italian did it proud, storming to a fifth-place finish in the CART/Indy Car standings. Papis earned 11 top-five finishes in 1999 highlighted by back-to-back second-place runs at Surfers Paradise and Fontana. Had victory in his grasp in Michigan but ran out of fuel halfway through the last lap, gifting the win to Tony Kanaan. Led the series in laps completed and was second in laps led to earn a berth on the inaugural CART All-Star Team. Scored the first pole of his career at Chicago, where he would finish fourth. Bryan Herta took his customary spot atop the podium at Laguna Seca, this time going wire-to-wire in leading all 83 laps from pole. He was joined on the podium by Papis, marking the first time in the team’s history that both of its drivers were on the podium at the same race. Herta finished 12th in the standings, earning three other top-five placings to go with his Laguna victory.
