TEAM ETHANOL AND SCOTT SHARP PODIUM
FINISH SPARK IOWA MEDIA EXPOSURE
NEWTON, Iowa—As expected, the Rahal Letterman Racing Team Ethanol machine, and its driver Jeff Simmons,
were one of the focal points of the pre-race media coverage surrounding the inaugural Iowa Corn Indy 250, while a
season-best third-place run for Scott Sharp and his Patrón car ensured that RLR received a good bit of post-race
attention as well.
Marketing/PR update— Scott started things off on race week by participating
in the IndyCar Series weekly teleconference, where a dozen journalists
took the opportunity to question Scott on the new track, since he
was one of the few drivers that had a chance to test there prior to the
race weekend.
Jeff arrived in Iowa on Wednesday and put in a full day in visiting Iowa
media on Thursday. He did live phone interviews with morning shows at
KXNO-AM and WMT-AM, before doing a round of in-studio visits.
He was live in-studio with KJJY-FM, KGGO-FM and 50,000-watt WHOAM,
which is one of the biggest and longest-running stations in the Midwest.
He talked about the race, about Ethanol and the role that EPIC and
RLR have played in the past seasons in taking Ethanol into the mainstream
of American motorsports coverage. The morning schedule was
set up by the track and by the IndyCar series, and was executed by RLR staff.
Upon conclusion of the media tour, Jeff took part in the Ethanol Pump Tour, where the EPIC staff again put together
a strong outing at a Kum and Go gas station in West Des Moines. The local CBS and ABC affiliates came and
filmed spots that aired on their evening newscasts, while KXNO-AM came out to the site and did two live cut-ins
with Simmons. The facility was busy for the entire 90 minutes, with fans coming out to get Ethanol-blended fuel, see
the Ethanol show car and meet Jeff.
Qualifying day saw a story on Scott Sharp run on the front page of the local Newton Daily News while the Des
Moines Register did a piece for Sunday’s paper talking to Scott and looking back at the old Trans-Am race in downtown
Des Moines that Sharp won back in 1993.
Simmons did another interview with the local ABC affiliate on Saturday morning, discussing the benefits of Ethanol,
and then did a photo opportunity on Sunday morning with U.S. Senator Sam Brownback, who is a 2008 Presidential
candidate. Simmons and the senator chatted for 15 minutes about Ethanol and how the league and the team
have helped further the cause of renewable fuels in this country.
Sharp’s strong performance in the event helped gain air time on the ABC broadcast as well. The broadcasts
featured three cut-ins featuring radio chatter between Sharp and his team, and also aired the team’s final key pit
stop. The third-place finish also earned Sharp a live post-race interview with Vince Welch as part of the broadcast.
